When a bus accident occurs, many people stand to get hurt. While buses are designed to minimize injury risk in the event of a crash, this doesn’t mean people can’t be severely injured and even killed. A Brooklyn bus accident on September 9 exemplifies how potentially damaging such auto accidents can be.
According to CBS New York, the accident happened when a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus collided with a car in Brooklyn. The accident happened at about 4:40 p.m. in Bed-Stuy at the intersection of Albany Avenue and Herkimer Street.
Forty-one people were hurt in all including 12 people who were seriously injured. That included passengers on the bus and occupants of the car as well. None of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.
Indications are that the driver of the car was fleeing from police and ran a stop sign. That’s when it was hit by the bus.
“He just zooms past. He hits the ground real hard and the detective’s car was right behind him,” said one witness.
The entire side of the car was caved in by the collision and the driver was the most severely injured in the entire accident.
“We cut the roof off,” said emergency responders of the rescue effort involved in freeing people from the car. “Removed the two patients from the car and then we were able to deal with the patients inside the transit authority bus.”
Whether you ride a bus or drive your own vehicle, an accident like this could prove to have long-term consequences. From the costs of medical treatment to the pain associated with serious injuries, accidents have many “costs” that can be difficult to bear.
