A young child was struck and killed by a New York City motorist— the seventh such accident in 2013, according to StreetsBlog.org. The three-year-old was crossing Main Street in Flushing with her grandmother when a Nissan SUV struck her.
According to the New York Daily News, the child was hit when she “broke free” from her grandmother while they were crossing. Police say charges are unlikely.
StreetsBlog.org reports that there is no indication of who had the right-of-way and whether the grandmother and child were crossing with the light or if they darted out in front of the SUV. Motorists have a responsibility to be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially children. Accidents involving a car and a pedestrian rarely end well for the person on foot.
Traffic accidents are the leading cause of injury-related deaths for young children. In NYC, on average, five children between the ages of 5 and 17 are struck by vehicles every single day.
Just 10 days prior to this accident, a 5-year-old child was struck and killed in Sunset Park.
Traffic safety in the city of New York, where pedestrians are numerous, requires motorists to exercise extra caution to prevent accidents like this from happening.
If you are involved in a pedestrian or a bicycle accident, you have rights just as you would if you were driving a vehicle. If you’re injured and the accident wasn’t your fault, the person at fault could be held responsible for your injuries. The car accident attorneys of Ginarte may be able to help.
