Sometimes those who are employed to save lives end up with their own lives on the line. When EMTs and firefighters respond to serious car accidents, bus accidents, or explosions, they are at risk of injury themselves. A recent construction accident in nearby Philadelphia illustrated this when a construction worker and a firefighter were both hurt.
According to CBS Philadelphia, the accident happened just before 2 p.m. at the intersection of JFK Boulevard and North 19th Street in Philly.
Firefighters responded when they received a call that a construction worker had fallen. The 54-year-old worker reportedly fell 20 feet.
A witness recounted the rescue, “They brought him out in a bucket, they brought him up to the surface, put him on a gurney and brought him to the ambulance.”
Two firefighters in a bucket had to rescue the worker, who was then transported to Hahnemann in critical condition.
During the rescue effort, a firefighter was hurt. It isn’t clear what caused the firefighter’s injuries, but a witness reported that he fell and hit his head as he ran to the perimeter of the construction accident scene.
Responders gave the firefighter an IV and loaded him into an ambulance. He was transported to Hahnemann and was listed in stable condition.
Some jobs are riskier than others. Construction work and firefighting are two of those jobs. When you work in fields like these, you assume risks every single day. Although you take steps to avoid accidents, sometimes they are beyond your control.
Whether it’s a careless coworker or the lack of a safety culture on the job site, accidents happen even to workers who are extra cautious. When you are hurt in an accident like this, you could be entitled to compensation.
