Construction work isn’t limited to New York and New Jersey and neither are construction accidents. Fortunately, we can learn from accidents that happen in neighboring states to prevent similar ones from happening here. Recently, such an accident happened in at Temple University in Philadelphia.
According to ABC 6 Philadelphia, a building under construction on the University campus partially collapsed. The building is the site of the new Science Education and Research Center.
One construction worker was seriously injured in the collapse, and five more were initially trapped.
“This was a very serious situation,” said Philly’s Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers. “We had heavy rescue, went up to that location, they assessed the situation as far as how safe it was to start the operation. They did start the operation. We got our paramedics up to care of the injured worker that was down.”
The construction site will remain closed until an investigation is complete. Temple University spokesperson Ray Betzner says the college will be working with the city to determine exactly what went wrong.
Such construction accidents are relatively rare but far from unheard of. The structural collapse of a building has the potential to crush workers, leaving them with serious or even potentially fatal injuries.
In this case, they are fortunate only one worker was seriously injured.
As a construction worker, you work in a dangerous field. You take risks every day. And while you have to be accountable for your own safety, so too does your supervisor, employer, and the owner of the property that you’re working on.
When an accident like this happens, workers are often entitled to compensation for their injuries.
