The likelihood that you will return home after work in the same condition you left the house in the morning is directly linked to the type of work you do. Even within the field of construction, some sites and jobs are safer than others. But when you work in construction, some level of risk is always present.
A construction site in Massachusetts offers an example of a serious construction accident and leaves several questions unanswered.
According to MassLive.com, three workers somehow became trapped under a modular trailer that was being used as temporary office space. How the accident happened is unclear. Also unclear is what the workers were doing under the trailer, which was being used while the building they were working on got an addition.
Around 9:40 a.m., a 911 call was received that three men were pinned under the trailer. One was able to free himself and had only minor injuries. Another worker was freed when emergency officials arrived. Using a large crane, they were able to remove the trailer. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The third worker was killed.
The trailer was very large and heavy, and the two men who were able to walk away were extremely fortunate not to be seriously injured by the 50-feet-long and 10-feet-wide trailer.
Again, how the accident occurred isn’t clear. It is also unclear why the men were under the trailers when that was not their work site.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating, as are state officials from the Department of Industrial Accidents, to try and determine why the accident occurred and if any safety rules or laws were sidestepped in the hours or days leading up to the crushing accident.
More than 50 emergency responders from various departments and agencies responded to the accident when it occurred. Their quick actions may have saved a life.
