When the Occupational Safety and Health Administration cites a company, the company is typically required to pay a fine. When the same company is repeatedly in violation of safety standards, OSHA is forced to increase the penalties.
According to the official website of OSHA, one New Jersey masonry contractor, F. Pardo Corp., is facing two repeat violations for fall hazards. Repeat violations are those that the company has been cited for previously. Unlike first time offenses, these carry larger fines. The company is facing a total of $46,200 in proposed penalties.
OSHA enforces safety standards for one reason: to protect workers. Construction work is dangerous work, and the people who do this work deserve protection. Construction companies must follow the rules to minimize the risks for their workers.
OSHA cited F. Pardo Corp., for allegedly failing to protect workers against fall hazards and for failing to protect them against falling objects. OSHA’s investigation found that workers were exposed to falling objects while working below masonry activities without hard hats. They also discovered that workers were exposed to falls of 18 feet on a scaffold without any fall protection in place.
These violations are not the first for the company, which was similarly cited in 2010 and again in 2011.
“This company continues to needlessly jeopardize the safety of its workers by repeatedly failing to provide them with personal protective equipment appropriate for the job,” said Lisa Levy, director of OSHA Hasbrouck Heights Area Office. “Employers who disregard OSHA standards and do not uphold their responsibility to keep workers safe and healthy will be held legally accountable.”
