A Newark man was killed while working on a Mare Island construction site recently. According to the San Jose Mercury news, the 48-year-old worker was part of a surveying team that was readying a site for residential construction.
The surveyor crew he was working with was sharing the site with a grading crew that was readying the ground for construction, and it was one of its large earthmovers that struck and killed him.
A nearby forest worker who could see the site from his position remarked that it looked unsafe for the surveyors to be standing so near the large machines as they traveled back and forth on the lots. While the victim was holding the large measuring stick used in surveying land, he was hit by a Cat scraper. Apparently, the driver of the large machine didn’t see him below.
After the collision, the driver of the scraper saw the victim lying on the ground. He immediately stopped and jumped off the machine to help. Just after 1 p.m., emergency officials were called to the scene.
The state’s branch of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (Cal OSHA) will be investigating the accident along with the state’s industrial safety oversight agency and the county coroner. Their investigation will focus on the cause of the accident and specifically if anything could have been done to prevent it.
Often in the case of serious construction accidents, workers or employers overlook safety rules or laws in an effort to get things done faster. They sacrifice safety for speed or their bottom line. When this leads to an accident, they can be held responsible for the damage it causes.
