You might consider yourself a safe person, someone who doesn’t take a lot of risks and who is always looking to prevent an accident. But regardless of how safe you are, you will encounter people who aren’t as cautious. And when you’re out in public, over at someone’s house, or even on your front porch, someone else’s carelessness could cause you serious harm.
Recently, a man walking down the street in Jersey City was caught completely off guard when the trunk of a car he was passing exploded. WABC reports that a man doing refrigeration work in a deli on New York Avenue had put his equipment in the trunk of his car just before it exploded.
The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. July 2, at the corner of New York Avenue and Congress Street. In the trunk of the car was a tank of air conditioning refrigerant, the suspected cause of the explosion.
The man who had just placed the equipment in the vehicle was seriously injured. He sustained blast injuries to his chest and head. A passerby sustained injuries to his face that also required hospitalization.
You probably wear your seatbelt when you drive. But no one thinks of wearing protective gear while walking down the street, nor should they have to. We live our lives with a certain amount of faith that others are being reasonably cautious. When those who are less-than-cautious cause preventable accidents, people harmed through no fault of their own we are left trying to pick up the pieces.
Whether it was a negligent act or a reckless one, if you are hurt and it was someone else’s fault, he or she can be held responsible for your injuries. In this case, the man himself or the company employing him to do refrigeration work could be held accountable. If there were flaws in the design of the tank holding the refrigerant, that company could likewise be held responsible.
Everyone has a role to play in keeping this world safe and free of hazards. When that doesn’t happen and you are injured as a result, you have legal options.
