As the weather warms, more people are out on motorcycles. And because motorcycle accidents have the potential to be particularly traumatic, extra caution is crucial during this time of year. At least one local police department is calling on all motorists to be vigilant and cautious in looking for motorcyclists and avoiding such serious accidents.
According to NBC40.net, a recent accident in Egg Harbor Township has the local police on alert. The accident involved one of their own, an off-duty Atlantic City Police Officer.
The officer was seriously injured when he swerved to miss colliding with an oncoming vehicle. He was thrown from his motorcycle and subsequently suffered a serious leg injury. He had to undergo emergency surgery, but his action potentially saved his life.
“He did the correct thing in swerving out of the path of travel, rather than being hit by the car,” said Teresa Thomas of the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance.
Had the officer not taken evasive action, a collision would have been unavoidable, and motorcycle collisions often end in death. His choice, one motorcycle safety instructor says, is evidence that the officer was trained in road safety. That instructor, Tom Wright, says it’s especially important this time of year for drivers to be extra cautious while on the road.
“Motorists also need to look left and right and left again before they pull out into traffic because the motorcycle is difficult to see,” said Tom Wright.
Both motorcyclists and other motorists have a responsibility to avoid motorcycle accidents. By always being aware of your surroundings you can prevent an accident, whether you are in a car or on a bike.
As a cyclist, however, you can’t depend on all motorists to keep your safety at the forefront. The stakes are too high to trust someone else with your safety. Taking the time to revisit safety rules or even sign up for a motorcycle safety course is a good way to reduce your risks while on the road. And when an accident does happen, know your rights.
