Motorcyclists are clearly more vulnerable in crashes than other motorists. But this does not mean that motorcyclists are never at fault in accidents.
Recent motorcycle accidents in New Jersey and New York illustrate the dangers – for the motorcyclists as well as those in their paths. As reported on NJ.com and CBS New York:
- A motorcycle driver crossed a double-yellow line and struck a car in New Jersey. The driver of the car died.
- A motorcycle driver was speeding and collided with a car in New Jersey. The motorcycle driver suffered a severe injury.
- A New Jersey motorcyclist driving without insurance went off the road and landed in brush.
- A pedestrian in Queens died as he was crossing the street and a motorcycle struck him.
Unfortunately, motorcyclists do not always follow the rules of the road, creating unsafe conditions for everyone.
On its website, Allstate Insurance lists the following driving safety tips for motorcycling:
- Wear a helmet at all times.
- Know the limits of your bike.
- Do not speed.
- Do not tailgate other vehicles.
- Use your signals when making a turn.
- Do not weave through traffic or drive on the shoulder.
- Do not drive in blind spots – make sure other drivers can see you.
- Use both brakes simultaneously, slowly and steadily.
Above all, motorcyclists and drivers of all types of vehicles must remember that even small errors can lead to serious consequences, for themselves and others.
