Flying is reportedly one of the safest modes of transportation, yet many people are afraid to fly. A little turbulence can send us all into a bit of a panic, but it’s probably nowhere near the panic that the passengers on board a US Airways flight into Newark felt in 2013.
According to Reuters, the airplane’s landing gear failed to deploy, and the pilot was forced to land the aircraft on its belly. Flight 4560 from Philly to Newark had 34 passengers on board when it skidded onto the runway at about 1 a.m.
The pilot allegedly made an emergency declaration when the plane’s left main landing gear failed to deploy. He circled over the airport for several minutes trying to get it to open. But when it was obvious that the landing gear was not going to work, he was forced to make an emergency landing.
According to experts, this type of belly landing is particularly dangerous because the fuselage scrapes along the hard surface of the runway. Photos taken of the plane after the landing show it sitting in a pool of liquid, which was probably used to cool the underbelly of the plane once it was safely on the ground.
Passengers were immediately evacuated from the runway by bus and taken to the terminal. The runway was shut down for eight hours following the incident, and the airport was closed for an hour.
It’s fortunate that no one was injured in the landing, as a rough landing can result in significant injuries—both physical and mental.
Plane crashes are rare, but injuries on planes do happen. And whether it occurs when the plane has a rough landing or if it actually crashes, there must be a way for passengers to seek justice.
