In recent times, it has become apparent that the elderly are not always properly cared for in nursing homes. In an attempt to reverse this trend, the federal government, in 1987, passed the Nursing Home Reform Act (NRA).
The NRA sets standards for all nursing homes that receive funds from Medicaid or Medicare. Under this law, nursing homes must employ a sufficient amount of nurses and staff to competently care for their patients in a timely and efficient manner. The law also requires that patients are cared for in a competent manner and treated with dignity.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General, 90% of the country’s were cited for federal violations from 2005-2007. Perhaps the most staggering statistic of them all is that the most common violations involved the quality of care afforded to the patients. According to ABC News, approximately 1.6 million people reside in 17,000 nursing homes and 11,000 of them are for-profit businesses.
