Residents of a neighborhood in Short Hills, N.J., are trying to stop a builder from using explosives on a nearby construction site. According to NBC4, the builder plans to use explosives twice a day for at least 20 days.
The neighbors expressed concern about potential injuries and property damage from the explosions.
New Jersey Law on Explosives
Under New Jersey law, the builder’s proposed use of explosives is legal, as long as a town fire inspector supplies a permit. But residents say that if things go wrong, they will be the ones to suffer.
In 2011, fires and explosions caused 143 workplace deaths and many more injuries in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists numerous injuries associated with explosions, including:
- Brain injuries.
- Eye penetration.
- Burns.
- Crush injuries.
- Blast lung, which is the most common fatal injury among those who initially survive the blast.
Some New Jersey lawmakers want to make it more difficult for builders to use explosives near bystanders and homes. According to NBC4, State Sen. Richard Codey wants to change the law and encourage the use of alternatives, such as jackhammers and hydraulics.
