The National Transportation Safety Board, or NTSB, issued its findings last week after a year-long investigation surrounding a Bronx bus crash that killed 15 people last year. The report concluded that the accident was likely caused by a combination of driver fatigue and a bus company that failed to abide by safety rules and regulations that are intended to protect the public and employees.
Driver fatigue, often referred to as driving drowsy, is a monumental problem on the nation’s roadways. The problem becomes an even greater risk when the driver is operating a commercial vehicle, as was the case in the tragic accident that took place last March.
The NTSB indicates that driver fatigue was a factor in seven of the last 19 passenger bus accidents that the board investigated. The passenger bus, or motor coach, industry transports over 700 million people a year, according to the NTSB.
The tragedy that took place in the Bronx last year shows us the potential consequences of just one driver who fails to heed the warning signs of fatigue and of a company that fails to follow the laws that are in place to prevent catastrophes such as this from happening.
