Patrons at the café of Le Parker Meridien Hotel in New York had to run to safety when a construction accident broke a wall into the hotel resulting in a “river” of wet cement and debris pouring through the hole.
According to NBC New York, construction workers were on a job site next door to the café when they broke through the adjoining wall into the hotel. Where previously customers sat sipping their coffee, scattered debris and wet cement filled the space. The patrons had to “run like mad” to escape the mess.
Fortunately, no one was injured and the FDNY responded quickly to secure the area. Damage to the hotel was confined to the espresso bar area.
New York City construction sites pose a unique hazard to the public with workers required to work in close quarters, and with so many people walking in and around the sites. While it is unclear how many bystanders have been injured or killed in NYC construction accidents, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that in 2010, fatal work injuries totaled 68 for New York City alone.
The BLS reports that nationwide in 2010 there were 4,547 fatal work injuries.
Construction companies and their workers are expected to adhere to the established safety regulations. When those standards are not followed and a worker or innocent bystander is killed or seriously injured, the company responsible may be liable for damages.
Fortunately, if you are hurt in such an accident, you do have rights.
