Summer is always a time of increased pedestrian accidents. In recent weeks, we’ve seen more of these accidents in the headlines, suggesting that this summer may be a particularly dangerous one for pedestrians.
Two randomly chosen headlines indicate this frightening possibility. One, published on July 28 by CBS New York, reads: “2 Pedestrians Killed, 3 Injured in Separate Weekend Accidents in NYC.” Another equally troubling headline from StreetsBlog.org on August 12 says: “Boy, 5, Among Three Pedestrians Killed By Drivers This Weekend.”
It’s logical that New York City would have more pedestrian accidents than other cities simply because of its size and the amount of pedestrian traffic. There are thousands of people who walk to and from train stations and bus stops. The sidewalks are always filled with people coming and going.
In one accident, a 5-year-old boy, his mother, and his sister were all hit by a driver in Dongan Hills. Witnesses said they saw the driver of a Mercedes-Benz exit a parking lot and look both ways before pulling out and crashing immediately into the family. The 7-year-old girl and the mother were hospitalized and later released. The young boy wasn’t so lucky.
These accidents happen between cars and pedestrians, motorcyclists and pedestrians, and bicycles. They happen on busy corners and in parking lots. They happen all over the city and involve people from all walks of life.
In some accidents, the driver is found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which of course plays a role in their judgment and reaction times. In other cases, the driver is distracted—whether by a phone or a passenger. But sometimes the driver simply doesn’t see the pedestrian.
A pedestrian accident is usually the fault of the motorist. In cases in which such an accident results in a serious injury, that motorist can be held responsible for the consequences.
