Working in construction can be a dangerous profession. In fact, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, the construction industry has one of the highest rates of injuries leading to fatalities.
The study examined fatal and nonfatal injuries in the construction sector on a state-by-state basis for several years. According to the results, the states with the lowest number of fatal construction accidents were Arizona, California, Maine, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. The states with the highest number of fatal construction accidents were Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
With regards to nonfatal injuries, researchers discovered that states with more extensive workers’ compensation benefits had a higher report rate of nonfatal injuries. John Mendeloff, lead author of the study, suggests that comprehensive benefits provide more of an incentive for workers to their report injuries.
