Very few people go to work in the morning thinking about all of the potential accidents that could happen. Sure, doing this might make them more aware and careful as they go about their day, but it would also border on paranoia. Still, countless people face risks on their jobs, whether they are working in home construction or another trade entirely.
One man was seriously injured as he worked on a traffic light in Rye Brook. He certainly had no way to know an accident was about to happen. But the accident no doubt changed his day and life in the blink of an eye.
According to the Rye Patch, the accident occurred as the 52-year-old man was working in a bucket on a lift truck. A passing tractor trailer hit the bucket, knocking him off. He initially hung from the traffic light itself, but fell from the light onto the passing trailer when a safety connection broke loose. From there, he rolled off the truck and onto the street, face first.
The man was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he received treatment for a broken nose, several broken ribs, and underwent surgery for a broken elbow.
The accident has been reported to the Department of Labor’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). The truck involved in the accident was driven by a 50-year-old woman employed by a trucking company out of Pennsylvania. She has not been cited, and the truck was equipped with all of the necessary paperwork.
The accident is still under investigation, and the traffic light was still under repair when the story went to press.
Could the injured worker in this case have done anything differently to prevent the accident from happening? It doesn’t seem likely. This is often how workplace accidents occur—an employee adhering to all safety standards is hurt when someone else makes a mistake, is distracted, or cuts corners.
When someone else causes an accident, that person or an employer can often be held responsible for your injuries. The attorneys with Ginarte may be able to help.
