Airplane crashes are relatively rare. However, over the past months, we’ve seen several such accidents in the news. Most recently, a crash in nearby Connecticut left at least three people missing and a house in shambles.
According to WTNH, the plane crash happened late on the morning of August 9 in East Haven. The twin-engine plane crashed into a home near Tweed-New Haven airport. Two children inside the home could not be located, and the pilot and any potential passengers were also missing.
“There appears to be one person in the airplane and two people who were in the home,” remarked East Haven Mayor Joe Maturo. “Nobody has been recovered as of yet.”
Despite his analysis, an ABC affiliate in Seattle reported that there were two people on the airplane—former Microsoft executive Bill Henningsgaard and his son. Incidentally, Henningsgaard was involved in another plane crash in 2009 when his aircraft crash-landed in the Columbia River in Washington.
The children inside the home were reported to be a 13-year-old and a one-year-old.
Officials from the Tweed airport said the pilot was making an instrument approach and went around for a second attempt at landing when the crash occurred. There were no distress calls made from the plane to the tower.
The crash “totally demolished” the home it hit. A witness said the plane ended up in a woman’s bedroom and that the resulting fire damaged the house of impact as well as a few others. A nearby car also caught on fire.
Several agencies responded to the accident, including firefighters from East Haven, New Haven, and Branford. Both the FAA and NTSB will be investigating.
“This is a very overlapping investigation that has to take place with local fire, local police, federal folks,” said the governor.
Plane crashes may be rare, but even when they involve small aircraft, they are often deadly. Just as in car accidents, the person or people responsible for the accident can be held accountable. In this case, for example, a wrongful death claim could be filed by the mother of the children killed in the accident, or an injury claim could be filed if she was hurt as she fled the home.
