A website designed to offer young workers information on common workplace hazards has won the grand prize in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Worker Safety and Health App Challenge. The Labor Department sponsored the challenge to raise awareness among young, tech-savvy workers about the importance of workplace safety. It challenged workers to submit tools or apps that would “best demonstrate the importance of recognizing and preventing workplace safety and health hazards, and help young people understand their rights in the workplace.”
Entrants were required to submit an app that would work on today’s smartphones or social media platforms, could be used with an Internet browser, or would work as an original Windows or Macintosh application.
Winners were selected in three categories: Safety in the Workplace Innovator Award, Safety and Health Data Award, and Workers’ Rights Award. In addition, the entry that garnered the most public votes through the contest’s website received a People’s Choice Award.
The winning entries can be viewed on the U.S. Department of Labor’s website. They include:
- Safety in the Workplace Innovator Award: Considered the grand prize and winning $15,000 was Working Safely Is No Accident, a website providing accessible information on common workplace hazards and workers’ rights to a safe workplace.
- Safety and Health Data Award: A $6,000 prize went to a USW Chemical Safety application that allows users to search a database for information on workplace exposure limits, health hazards, workplace controls, personal protective equipment, handling and storage and emergency procedures related to hazardous substances in the workplace.
- Workers’ Rights Award: Another $6,000 prize was awarded for the No Jack – Young Workers’ Safety Campaign website aimed at educating young workers regarding their rights in the workplace.
- People’s Choice Award: Winning a $3,000 prize was an ergonomics iOS application that provides ergonomic equipment setup advice, a variety of workplace-specific stretching exercises and programmable reminders to help time breaks and prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
If you have been injured in a workplace accident, you could be entitled to third -party compensation in lieu of, or in addition to, workers’ compensation. All too often, workers’ compensation benefits fail to adequately compensate the victim of an on-the-job accident.
