Whether you work on big commercial buildings in the heat of the sun or on road construction projects in the dark of night, construction work is dangerous. And each construction site has its own unique dangers and risks. While it’s your job to be aware and cautious at all times, your employer and the job site owner have responsibilities for your safety as well. When they fail to live up to these responsibilities, accidents are far more likely to happen.
Recently, a worker on a nighttime road construction project suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. According to the Asbury Park Press, the worker was attempting to clean off a machine when he became partially trapped.
The 27-year-old Toms River man was attempting to clean asphalt off an unspecified piece of machinery while doing paving work. His feet became trapped underneath the machine’s belt and metal. He was trapped for several minutes as he waited for fellow workers to help free him. The workers used a pry bar and a torch to cut the metal that had him trapped.
The man was taken from the scene by helicopter to the trauma unit at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. His leg suffered serious burns and lacerations, according to reports. It isn’t clear what his condition was or the specifics of his injuries.
Being involved in an accident like this can be frightening. Everything seems to happen in slow motion as you wait for coworkers or emergency responders to help. For some people, the pain is unbearable, and they lose consciousness as they wait.
Whether you are injured from being trapped under a machine or you fall from a roof, construction accidents have the potential to be life-changing or even life-ending. Fortunately, when the accident is caused by a less than safe work environment, someone can be held responsible for the resulting injuries.
