Some jobs are riskier than others. While construction accidents are the most common workplace accidents, other careers have their share of risks. People working in law enforcement, manufacturing, landscaping, and transportation industries face potential danger every day. In recent weeks, two accidents in the tree care sector in Massachusetts have served as a reminder other jobs have their risks.
According to EHSToday.com, an accident happened when branches entangled in electrical wires fell on a worker, causing him to suffer serious electrical burns. The second incident ended even more tragically: when a worker’s chainsaw hit a power line, he was electrocuted and the bucket he was in caught fire.
“Coming in contact with live electrical overhead wires with equipment, tools, or parts of the body is a life-threatening hazard encountered by tree workers,” said an occupational health trainer for MassCOSH, the state’s occupational safety agency. “All care must be taken by surveying the work area for overhead electrical hazards before commencing any tree work.”
“He had burns pretty much over his whole body—his chest, legs. I’m sure he breathed in a lot of heat,” said the Deputy Fire Chief about the fatal electrocution accident.
Tree workers are not only in danger of electrocution. They may be injured by falling limbs and trees, and by falling out of a bucket or off a ladder. Many of these risks are similar to those that cause construction accidents.
A proper safety training program for employees is essential for companies that want to keep their workers safe. But even in cases where proper training is provided, a worker can be seriously injured when poorly maintained equipment is used or when a coworker or supervisor is careless.
As in the construction industry, when an accident happens in the tree trimming, landscaping, or manufacturing industry, your employer can be held responsible for your injuries.
