Twelve pedestrians, including a mother and her 2-year-old child, were injured recently when a car jumped the curb in Brooklyn, New York. According to NBC New York, the Lincoln sedan crashed through a bus stop in East Flatbush and hit a sidewalk shed, which collapsed. The car’s driver and a passenger were also injured.
New York City officials have come under considerable criticism for their policies on investigating motor- vehicle accidents. The pressure helped bring about a change in a policy that limited investigations only to cases involving a death or likely death. The new policy calls for an accident to be investigated “when there has been a critical injury or when a Police Department duty captain believes the extent of the injuries and/or unique circumstances of a collision warrant such action.”The recent accident in Brooklyn qualified for investigation under the new policy.
Throughout New York State, there were 15,926 motor vehicle-pedestrian collisions in 2011, according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Those collisions killed 304 people, most of whom were pedestrians. In addition, 15,689 pedestrians were injured in motor vehicle crashes that year, with 1,881 listed as seriously injured.
